My son James and I have been reading the great book by Brian Selznick, Wonderstruck. In the story, one of the primary characters, Ben, frequently remembers a quote his mother posted on their fridge: We are all in the gutter but some of us are looking at the stars. I love this line and had to explain it to James
The gutter is really the place where all the debris of daily life flows away. In this line from Selznick’s book, I explained, we are all living among this debris, but some of us have the capacity, or at least the desire, to image something beyond.
