A number of years ago, I worked with an MFA student from Malaysia, Siew-Wai Kok. She was a very smart, sensitive, and unique student. Siew-Wai worked primarily with video and music (her specialty was vocal improvisation). She spent a number of years in Buffalo before coming to Alfred to earn her MFA. Siew-Wai moved back to Buffalo after earning her degree, and became involved in the local art scene. After a couple of years in Buffalo, she got mixed up in a strange and stressful legal/political tug-of-war and was sent back to Malaysia; the government refused to renew her visa (I always assumed that was because she is from a Muslim country).
Since returning to Kuala Lumpur, Siew-Wai has remained involved with her experimental improvisation. She sends me email updates from time to time. I got these links this morning. It’s always good to hear from old friends.
